Columbarium - purchase a space

Following the tradition of European Cathedrals, Christchurch can now enjoy a place in the centre of the city where the names of the departed can be publicly remembered and their ashes kept secure in perpetuity. Located on the south lawn of the Cathedral in the Square, the stone columbarium can house up to 700 urns with names displayed on a bronze plaque. In addition, names, and any other details, you would like kept on record, are entered in the Columbarium Register, which will be kept in the Cathedral and available on request. The columbarium is open to all people, regardless of background or belief.

Places can be reserved and paid for ahead of time. The project serves not only to respect loved ones, but also to help secure the financial future of the Cathedral. Ashes are kept in perpetuity, and when the Columbarium is full, it will be closed.
Designed by architects Royal & Associates, the columbarium has gathered widespread support, and City Council approval after a long resource consent process of public consultation.
