CLIMBING THE TOWER
Climbing the Cathedral's tower has been one of the most popular activities for those visiting the Cathedral. Amazing views of the central city and Port Hills could be enjoyed. The tower, prior to its collapse on Feb 22nd, 2011, was 36 metres high and the spire 27 metres, making it 63 metres from ground level to the cross at the top. Access was by a narrow winding stone and steel stair case. On the way to the viewing platforms, the Cathedral's large bronze bells could be seen. Short video clips presenting aspects of the Cathedral's life were available for viewing once 'climbers' reached the top of the tower. As a memento of the climb up the tower, a 'Tower Climb Certificate' was available for purchase from the Cathedral Gift Shop.
Audio tours related to the now damaged Cathedral were available in English, Chinese, Japanese and German. These were available for purchase at the Cathedral Gift Shop in the Visitors' Centre. $10 per unit. The tour took approximately 35 minutes.
